Tom has practiced, researched and taught architecture since 1973 in Australia, Canada and Africa. He has extensive successful experience in directing interdisciplinary teams to reach integrated results in tight time frames and budgets. He is appreciated by colleagues and clients for his strong capacity to communicate complex ideas using simple graphics that guide team strategies and actions. Based on his expertise in design, and using a variety of frameworks for assessing sustainable performance Tom has developed an integrated framework which guides his planning and architectural practice. He is passionate about working collaboratively with clients and design teams to determine their environmental, economic and social priorities. He guides teams in identifying baselines, setting objectives, and developing innovative planning and design strategies to meet design quality, sustainability, and financial targets within time horizons required by each client. Between 1983 and 2004 he was a Professor in Architecture at The Technical University of Nova Scotia and Dalhousie University, and served over 6 years as Dalhousie’s Founding Dean of Architecture and Planning (1997-2003).
