Mariners Centre Expansion

CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Inspired by the Yarmouth Mariners championship hockey prowess, the aging downtown pool and gym in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia are being replaced and integrated with the existing Mariners Centre Arena. The new lap pool meets standards to host regional competitions. The leisure pool provides lessons for kids, exercises for adults, and fun activities for everyone. The gym hosts indoor running and exercises of every kind. The universal change room enables families to prepare together for all activities in safety and privacy.

Driven by the collective vision of the Town of Yarmouth, the District of Yarmouth, the District of Argyle, the Acadia First Nation, and the Kespu’kwitk Metis Council, the project aims for inclusion of people of every age and background. TEAL partnered with firm +VG for this project.

Per the initial program, four options were examined to extend the existing complex. However, desired visual connections between an upscaled lobby, existing arenas, new pools, and a new gym proved challenging. The cost of connecting new and existing structures exceeded the budget, and the funding requirement of net-zero carbon-readiness. It was determined that these constraints could only be met with an independent building.

These factors led to an innovative design strategy in which the concept of one ‘wellness gathering place’ was expanded to the whole site including existing building, new building, and other site features. The new lobby is designed as a community living room, and the landscape is designed as a year-round gathering place with walking and running paths connecting the existing facility with the new.
